When everybody decides to put the things of Christ first, and is willing to suffer loss that the honor and glory of Christ might be advanced, that is what brings harmony in a congregation.

When you call them back to an understanding of the meaning of the cross, you will find all the divisions disappearing; they fade away like the morning mist. Now, Paul says this is all basically, fundamentally wrong. Others were saying, "Well, Apollos himself baptized me."

Divisions in the Church Whenever this attitude of gathering around a man is allowed to perpetuate itself, it is the source of much trouble and difficulty. This is the result of a religious snobbery associated by cliques that produced pride and conflict. They did not try to hide the problems. [Then he thinks of another group that he had baptized] (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. People begin to think things about him that are not true, and expect things from him that he is unable to deliver. 3- The presence of an immoral member. That is what Paul speaks about. God only sees one fold, (John 10) and there is only one faith, one Lord, one baptism etc. When daylight again appeared, they looked for him with renewed energy but still without success. The cross of Christ cuts across all human value systems. We pray that it may be rich and real in our hearts as we live this week together. With all the differences among us, it is impossible to get people to think alike. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them; that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. We all know what a clique is. That is the mind Paul is talking about. I have to admit though that sometimes I think about numbers and recognition and want that. They embraced the values of their Roman society, which divided over ethnicity (e.g., Jews vs. Gentiles) and social rank (wise vs. foolish, powerful In my opinion, this is one of the main reasons our churches are so split and why we act more like the world rather than more like Christ. DIVISIONS AND PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH Now, almost every group does this. (1Corinthians 1:10 RSV). They will not all be the same flavor; they will not all have the same characteristics. Divisions never really ended with Pauls letters; they just appear to have evolved into having more sophisticated names. I remember a few years ago being at a family congress in St. Louis, Missouri, when one of the evening speakers was Dr.Oswald Hoffman, the very capable and powerful preacher on the Lutheran Hour radio program. One of these influencing factors is consumerism which finds its way into even the way Christians think. These kinds of things happen when there are divisions in a church. Here in Verse10 he briefly shows us the ground of unity, and the nature of unity in a church. To an unbeliever, this looks like we cannot agree on our own religion. Paul condemns their behavior in verse 13 by saying, Has Christ been divided? In other words, have different amounts of Christ been given to different people? By focusing on Jesus we can see how important the parts of church really are. What is a clique? Each group claimed to be better than the others, and party spirits began to grow in the church. He then goes on to explain that it was the Corinthian wisdom that created so much disunity. But when doctrinal beliefs keep churches from working together to further the gospel. It is not merely that the Church is everywhere split up into sections, but that this has led to party strife and jealousy. Paul is putting his finger right on the problem when he asks, "Was Paul crucified for you?" Webdivided. Members follow him blindly and whatever they do seems right to them.
Chapter Summary Im not saying its wrong to stick to what you believe. I think the letter to the Philippians helps us here, because in that passage I just quoted from, Paul goes on to say, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus," (Philippians 2:5). Now, the Apostle Paul is very concerned about this matter of incipient division in the church at Corinth, and he begins dealing with it in this powerful appeal for unity in Verse10: I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. These are two common causes of church divisions in the West.
Corinthians The Factions At Corinth For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. All that mattered to Paul was Jesus! There are some people who minister to us better than others, and it is only natural that we should listen to them and follow them. They are still acting just like the world. 2 Corinthians I dont remember Paul seeing any thing like these issues as other than trivial. They were caused by Cliques (1:12; 3:4). 2- The Churchs division. The groom and his attendants are in their places. There is not a single Christian teacher who ever lived who can help us be forgiven one single sin, not one. They are his family in Christ. These kinds of things happen when there are divisions in a church.
Corinthians Dio Chrysostom visited Corinth about A.D. 89-96. The Lords Supper was affected by the divisions between rich and poor and an overall general misunderstanding. Some Corinthian Christians were dividing over church teachers. Instead of tearing themselves apart, he urges them to be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. Divisions Here are our first clues as to what is wrong with this kind of cliquishness in a church. When it comes to seeking the spiritually lost for Christ, we can be much more effective if we are perfectly joined together in an unfailing zeal for Gods glory, not our own. On Friday of this week we will gather again to consider the cross of Christ. The Gentiles coming into this new Church do not seem to be able to see the differences between it and a Greco-Roman philosopher gathering disciples and educating them in a particular philosophy. One of his biggest goals is to double our congregation so we have 5,000 members. Four groups had formed in the Corinthian church. This is a very propitious time for us to consider the cross for this is Palm Sunday, commemorating the day when our Lord entered Jerusalem for his last week. Unless its mended, the tear gets bigger and bigger, doesnt it? The Lord Jesus is praying to the Father, and this is part of His prayer for us: I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one; even as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that You sent Me. The Greek word used here literally means to say the same thing. Therefore, the only basis upon which you can get Christians to agree is by setting before them the Person of the Lord Jesus, and calling them back to that fundamental base. It would destroy the unity of the congregation and split them up and provide an inaccurate testimony to the Person of Christ before the watching world. In the same way, thats not the way the Church was meant to be fitted together. Not when some people in the congregation wont look at, speak to, or even acknowledge the existence of certain other people in the congregation. They love to listen to someone because he turns them on emotionally. In verse 11, Paul gives the reason for his appeal for unity in the church at Corinth. In fact, there are still many divisions that exist today in modern churches. The third danger of groups is given in the latter part of Verse13, and on through the next few verses: Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? How important was unity to our Lord Jesus Christ? Are we willing and ready to pray for unity in His Church, and work at building a stronger unity among fellow members of the congregations where we fellowship and serve? These are not the only causes of divisions in churches today. In these cases, there should be freedom to agree to disagree. 5-Members going to pagan courts to settle disputes. We need to be perfectly joined together in the love of Christ. Since I was working at that time in the ship's service department in Pearl Harbor, we ordered great quantities of these Bibles. Causes Paul says that he does not preach in cleverness of speech because the power of the gospel lies in the facts of the gospel, and not in any mans presentation of them. They take an innocent teaching medium, in this case baptism, and make it into an identification badge. They forget, of course, that the church never belongs to anybody but the Lord. He then goes on to describe for us the mind of Christ, which is a willingness to give up rights and personal privileges and give in and take a lower place. The word divisions comes from the Greek word schismata, from which we get our English word schism. We feel some sense of connectedness to the teachers (pastors/leaders) whose teachings we sit under while they count us as proof of their effectiveness (numbers). In verse 10 we see both Pauls affection for the Corinthian church, and his authority as an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ.
